Syllable Wristband

A Syllable is a clap or a beat in a word...Every syllable must have a vowel in it

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 8, this is one of the most important concepts students need to know (implicitly or explicity) to crack the reading code. Sensitivity to syllables in words is a fundamental phonological awareness skill and isn't always established for students. TO PURCHASE SCROLL DOWN

Closed Syllable Wristband

A Closed Syllable ends in a consonant. The vowel sound is short

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 8c, this is the first of the syllable types taught systematically. In English, the only clue readers have to which sound a vowel should make in a syllable (short or long), is the type of syllable the vowel resides in. Students with reading difficulties often don't intuit these syllable types, nor do they intuit where syllable divisions exist within words - regardless to how much reading practice they get. For many students, this needs to be explicitly taught.

Open Syllable Wristband

An Open Syllable ends in a vowel. The vowel sound is long.

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 9a, this is the second of the syllable types taught systematically. Once students have an understanding of open and closed syllables, they are better placed to begin breaking into multi-syllable words.

Using 'k' Rule Wristband

Use 'k' in front of 'e', 'i', or 'y'

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 12, this important rule supports students to remember where the letters 'k' and 'c' are used to spell the sound (k). The important other half of this rule is that the letter 'c' is used in front of the remaining vowels; 'a', 'o' and 'u'. Of course, there are some exceptions to these rules

Using 'ck' Rule Wristband

Use 'ck' after a short vowel at the end of a one syllable word

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 14, this important rule supports students to remember where the letters 'ck' commonly go together to spell the sound (k). Students with reading difficulties often struggle to form stable orthographic representations of the different spellings of the (k) sound, so knowing these rules becomes a valuable support.

Suffix Concept Wristband

Suffix: a letter or a group of letters but at the end of a word; changes the meaning

Taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 21, suffixes begin students' important journey into morphology and grammar. Here students are taught that words consist of units of meaning: bases, roots and affixes, that go together and come apart and affect a word's role in a sentence (part of speech). Added to their developing awareness of syllables, the introduction of suffixes boosts student's word recognition abilities.

Consonant and Vowel Suffix Concept Wristband

Consonant suffix starts with a consonant

Vowel suffix starts with a vowel

Also taught in the Playberry structure at teaching point 21, the two main types of suffixes are introduced - suffixes that begin with consonants (consonant suffixes) and suffixes that begin with vowels (vowel suffixes). The distinction is important because as spelling rules related to the adding of suffixes are taught, students learn that vowel suffixes are the ones to beware (hence the skull and crossbones), because many important spelling rules relate to addition of vowel suffixes.
